    As the Unit Clerk, and under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse, and the Medical/Surgical Nurse Manager, this role is responsible for performing clerical, and receptionist duties. As the Patient Care Assistant, and under the supervision of Professional Nursing personnel, this position assists and provides patient care utilizing established standards of care.


    *Complies with PENN HIGHLANDS BROOKVILLE policies and procedures, accreditation agency requirements, and federal, state or local law and regulations


    Accurately and efficiently transcribes physician orders.


    Performs various clerical duties to support the nursing staff, including scheduling of follow up appointments for patients, faxing reports, notifying physicians’ offices of consults, transporting patients as needed, answers the nurse call system.

    Maintains the patient’s medical record per policy.


    Participates in the development of new staff as evidenced by but not limited to:

    • Actively participates in the orientation of new staff, including cultural and social integration.

    Demonstrates personal accountability as evidenced by but not limited to:

    • Achieves educational credits to meet hospital requirements.
    • Participates in the improvement of the department by individual or team contributions.
    • Conducts self in business manner in dress, actions, and interpersonal communication.

    Assures environment of safety for patients, significant others, and co-workers.


    Informs RN, RN Unit Supervisor, or Nursing Supervisor of patient care situations and departmental problems as appropriate.

    Demonstrates effective problem solving skills for clinical and departmental issues.


    Obtains vital signs, intake and output, and weights.


    Collects ordered specimens at the correct times and by correct method.


    Assists with personal hygiene and positioning of the patient.


    Dresses & undresses patients and cares for patient’s valuables during admissions.


    Performs procedures and treatments under direct supervision of the Registered Nurse, i.e. warm compresses, ice packs, enemas etc.

    Responds promptly to patient call bells and patient needs.


    Promptly reports changes in patient condition to the RN.


    Checks each patient and repositions, ambulates, and meets patient needs at a minimum of every hour, with her team co-workers.

    Maintains cleanliness of patient rooms by making beds, cleaning instruments & equipment, and caring for flowers.

    Maintains cleanliness of, and restocks supply areas and utility rooms.


    Passes meal trays and drinking water, assists patients with daily nutrition, measures intake and output, and cares for NPO patients accordingly.

    Achieves educational credits to meet hospital requirements.


    Helps improve the department with individual or team contributions.


    Conducts self in professional manner.



    Assures environment of safety for patients, significant others, and co-workers.



    Informs Charge RN and/or Nurse Manager of patient care situations and departmental problems as appropriate.

    Demonstrates effective problem solving skills to meet patient needs, and in working with co-workers, Charge RN, and RN Unit Supervisor.

    Participates or is aware of department Performance Improvement Initiatives.


    Participates in the identification of quality issues requiring improvement.


    Participates in data collection, development and/or implementation of action plans for the unit.

    Demonstrates effective & safe use of necessary equipment.


    Demonstrates compliance with hospital policies and procedures to maintain a safe environment.

    Promptly reports environmental concerns that may jeopardize safety.


    Promptly reports actual or potential events that compromise patient safety.


    Demonstrates compliance with infection control policies and procedures and implements infection control measures.

    Responds promptly to patients and co-workers’ requests for service within the scope of the employee’s responsibility.

    General duties as directed.





    • High School Diploma or Equivalent required
    • Experience in the Healthcare field
    • Typing skills
    • Medical terminology
    • Heart Saver CPR Certification required
